Riviera del Conero
Numana, from humble fishermen’s village it has become a modern tourist town.
At the foot of the Conero mountain, Numana unwinds along narrow streets loaded with history, through to the characteristic port.
The town is divided into two separate areas: Numana Alta and Numana Bassa.
The first is the oldest part, with the stone houses of Conero, the alleys, the tower and the Bishop’s palace (which now houses the town hall) facing onto Piazza del Santuario.
Here, we find the church housing the Holy Crucifix.
Numana Bassa is the more modern part with the tourist port and bathing establishments.
Numana’s origins date back to remote times, when it was an extremely important commercial hub of the Greek world.
We should recall the earthquake of 558 that caused much of the town’s dwellings to crash down into the sea.
Numana was rediscovered by the noble Romans in the early 20th century, who made it their "summer residence".
Numana’s beaches start with the "Gigli" beach, followed by the "Spiaggiola": these two wonders of nature are separated by the peak of Piazza Nuova with its beautiful gardens.
"La Spiaggiola" is a tongue of fine sand with a shallow bed and water that remains almost immobile, protected by the cliffs. Private and well-served with beach umbrellas, a bar and a restaurant that allow you to stay at the beach all day, enjoying all the comforts.
The outer port houses the boats and fishing equipment, as the long beach of Numana Bassa stretches out through to Marcelli and the Numana Lido.
This beach is connected by a pavement tempting you out to early morning and late evening walks.
It is a continuous parade of establishments, bars, restaurants and children’s entertainment. The Mediterranean aromas of lavender, juniper, pine, mint and wild fennel feature heavily in the air and on the table.
The hillsides can present you with the Rosso Conero, one of the world’s best red wines, and just a few kilometres away, you can find the white Verdicchio wine, with its intense, bitterish perfume… and this is just a tiny corner of what Numana really is… come and find out the rest for yourself....
