Your holiday
So today, you don’t want to go to the beach...
Loreto is 12 km away
The world-famous sanctuary housing the 'Holy House of Nazareth' has been the object of pilgrimages for more than seven centuries. Tradition has it, as borne out by the 1595 epigraph on the marble facing, that the angels carried the Holy House to the hill where the monumental Sanctuary stands today.
Recanati is 18 km away
Here, you can visit palazzo Leopardi, native house of the famous poet, where the descendents of his family still live. The elegant building that brings two ancient palaces together, was built to the design of the canon and count Orazio Leopardi. Il colle dell’infinito (Infinity hill), today a park boasting a vast, enchanting view celebrated by Giacomo Leopardi in his famous idyll: “Sempre caro mi fu quest’ermo colle…” (This solitary hill has always been dear to me…) A lane often taken by the poet leads to the little piazza of 'Sabato del Villaggo' (Saturday in the Village).
Beniamino Gigli Museum: housed in the town hall, the museum is devoted to the great Recanati-born lyrical singer. It preserves oddments, opera costumes and his personal record collection.
Fermo
A town bursting with art and history. Seen from the sea, which is just 5 km away, Fermo appears as a ship with the bow turned towards the mountain, looking straight at the ‘magical’ Sibillini, the ‘blue’ mountains so dear to Leopardi. Here, you can visit the well-preserved, extraordinarily large Roman Cisterns along with the remains of the theatre, bearing witness to Roman colonisation. The pretty Piazza del Popolo in the old town is formed by porticoes which are the remains of an old convent.
Ascoli Piceno
A town with ancient roots, its millennia-old past is all written in the ruins, in the evidence that has defied the centuries and can still be admired and visited.
The most prominent feature of Ascoli Piceno is that it is a true open-air museum, with examples of the styles of the various eras from the Middle Ages through to the Renaissance. Piazza del Popolo is reputed to be one of the most harmonious and spectacular squares of Europe. Ascoli is the town of ‘ceramics’, famous for the manufacturing of stone vases, crockery and plates. In July, there is a historical commemoration of the ‘Quintana’ joust.
Frasassi caves
Discovered in 1971 by the Marche-based speleological group CAI of Ancona and opened to the public in 1974.
The route through is extremely evocative and the lighting prepared by the famous scenographer Cesarini from Senigallia, accentuates the forms and colours of the engraved stalactites, the huge stalagmites and the lakes amidst crystal arabesques, alabaster lances that come away from the majestic faces.
